I'm getting more than a little bit tired of the dynamic of privileged white person
befriends not-so-privileged black person (with the black person helping the white person learn a lesson). Am I still supposed to be learning something from this? How about the realization that the black person isn't usually the one with the most power in this kind of relationship? Can we move on? Can we do something different? What about a powerful black person who meets an underprivileged white person and is reluctant to help them because of a complicated mix of reasons, including personal experience, class, and prejudice? The lesson-learning could go the other way around, too, without being demeaning. This isn't explored too often.
